Using Product Kata Core

What you may do

• Use Core freely, in your own company and in paid work for others. You do not need to ask us or tell us.
• Adapt it. Change, cut, extend and rename anything to fit your context. Your context matters most.
• Build your own from it. Turn Core’s handbooks, templates and agents into your company’s own playbooks, plans, templates and other assets.

Your playbooks are yours

When you build your own playbooks, plans, templates or other assets from Core, they belong to you. You may keep them private, share them across your organisation, give them to your clients and partners, or publish them, on whatever terms you choose. You do not have to put them under a Creative Commons licence, and you do not have to credit us. We would highly appreciate a credit — built with Product Kata Core, productkata.com — but it is your call.

Consultancies may adapt Core for a client and hand over the result as the client’s own, on the same terms.

When the Creative Commons terms apply

The terms of CC BY-SA 4.0 apply when you republish Core itself: its handbooks, the operating model, its templates, agents or articles, as they are or adapted, offered to others as a method to use. Then:

• credit Product Kata Core — productkata.com, with a link, and say if you changed it;
• share it under CC BY-SA 4.0, so it stays open for the next person.

Does it describe how your organisation works, or does it offer Core’s method to others? A playbook describing how your company runs its product work is yours. A course, book or handbook that teaches Core’s method is Core republished.

Showing where it came from

You may say your material is built with or based on Product Kata Core, and you may use the Product Kata logo beside those words in your own material. A Built with Product Kata Core badge made for exactly this is coming.

Two things we ask: do not present your material as Product Kata Core itself, and do not use the name or logo in a way that suggests Product Kata made, reviewed or endorses your work.

What is not included

• The name and the logo as your own brand. Product Kata and its logo stay ours. Using them to show where your material came from is welcome; using them to name or brand your own product, service or method is not.
• Other people’s work. Where Core credits another framework or author, their material stays theirs, on their terms.

Code

Where Core publishes software, as opposed to documents and agent instructions written in language, it carries an open-source software licence, stated with the code. No code is published yet.

The legal text

Product Kata Core is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence. This page grants you permissions in addition to that licence; it takes none away. Where this page and the licence differ, the more permissive reading applies to you.
